GeoExchange also known as Geothermal, Ground Source Heat Pumps, Earth Loops, or Earth Energy systems provide some of the lowest cost heating and cooling in the world. GeoExchange does not create heat through combustion; it simply relocates solar heat that is stored in ground. The system only requires an electric heat pump and there are no fossil fuels burned directly.
The temperature of the ground is fairly constant below the frost line. The ground is warmer in the middle of winter and cooler in the middle of summer than the outside air. A single efficient system can be used for both heating and cooling, eliminating the need for separate furnace and air-conditioning systems.
A GeoExchange system uses multiple vertical boreholes with flow-loops (earth-loops) installed in a closed-loop system to transfer the heat from the ground into a building during winter. In summer, the system is reversed to transfer heat out of the building, where it uses the cooler ground as a heat sink. The system can be adapted to tie into the buildings exiting heating & cooling infrastructure such as ducts, radiant heat pipes and/or in-floor heating.
GeoExchange is quickly becoming the go-to technology for reducing carbon footprint and optimizing energy costs for residential and commercial heating & cooling. GeoExchange systems can reduce energy consumption and corresponding emissions by over 40% compared to air source heat pumps and by over 70% compared to electric resistance heating with standard air conditioning equipment.
