There are three types of conduits used to drill wells including jointed pipe (drill pipe), cable and continuous pipe (coil tubing). Coil Tubing is a continuous piece of steel tubing that can range in diameter and length.
A Coil Tubing Unit (CTU) is a specialized piece of equipment designed to run the coil tubing pipe. The main components of a coil tubing unit configured for drilling are:
The drilling package includes a second piece of equipment to manage the fluid required for drilling. This unit includes:
The fluid filtration works in two stages; first by stripping out the larger drill cuttings, and second by removing the finer particles to allow for continuous use of the drilling fluid over multiple holes. The filtered fluid is pumped by a triplex fluid pump, that circulates through the coil tubing pipe to provide the hydraulic horsepower to the mud motor & bit for continuous drilling.
